Bunker Raking
Friday 1st August 2025
How to Rake a Golf Bunker Properly
1. Enter the Bunker from the Lowest Side
• Always enter from the low side (not the steep lip) to avoid damaging the edges.
• Avoid stepping in from the high face or dragging sand down slopes.
2. Hit Your Shot First
• Play your shot, then focus on clean-up.
3. Rake the Sand
• Smooth out all footprints, divots, and any disruption caused by your shot.
• Use a back-and-forth motion with the rake to level the surface.
• Don’t leave ridges—sand should be flat and consistent.
4. Work Backwards Toward the Exit
• Rake as you step backward out of the bunker, so you don’t walk over freshly raked sand.

Placing the rake after use
Proper Rake Placement in the Middle of the Bunker:
1. Face the Rake Toward the Direction of Play
o This means the handle should point toward the green or the general path of a ball that lands in the bunker.
o This reduces interference with shots entering the bunker.
2. Lay the Rake Flat
o Don't leave it at an angle—it can cause a ball to stop or bounce unnaturally.
3. Place It in the Center, Not the Edge
o Putting it in the middle helps keep bunker edges clean and reduces damage from repeated entries.
4. Avoid Deep Slopes
o Place the rake on a flat or gently sloped area in the center so it doesn't slide or affect ball movement.
