Winter Programme Update

Despite another bad spell of snow and frost during December/January the winter programme has progressed well and the course is looking and playing very well. Thanks must go to Terry and all the Green Staff for their hard work over the winter and i'm sure all our members will see the benefits during 2011.

Our main project was to continue to clear around the 4th/5th holes and this has been a great success. We have now exposed the original pond system to the right of the 4th hole, the walled garden and many fine specimen trees which were hidden by the rhododendrons and scrub. The new paths have been constructed through the woods to the raised back gents tee which has been re-turfed and will be used in the coming season. We have also sited one of our new permanent winter tee mats here and this has received nothing but praise. We hope to add another 2/3 tees this winter and then continue over the next few years to complete the job.

The second permanent winter tee has been sited on the 11th hole and this has been tied in with another new path through the trees which follows the original drovers' lane onto the estate before the golf course was here.

The other main project this winter was to re-new all the bunkers on the 8th hole and the two fairway bunkers near Peter's shop. These two have been raised slightly and brought inwards towards each other. All the new bunkers look excellent and match in with the majority of bunkers on the course. We have an ongoing project to refurbish as many of the bunkers that need it.

We have done no major drainage work this winter but we have replaced part of the drain across 5th fairway and also put a new drain in the 12th Green which will help its drainage and make a huge difference to the green.

The trees we planted on the 14th hole last winter unfortunatly did not take so we purchased  8 new trees and we have left the "dead" ones in place for the time being to give the new ones some time to establish themselves. The 3 new trees planted down near the bunkers will hopefully take and will add to our plan to shape the hole to save any further problems with balls going into the bungalow garden.

The greens have all be micro tined and the fairways have been verti drained which will benefit both as the weather starts to improve. We have also replaced the old metal fence behind the 5th green; this was on it's last legs and the new fence looks very good.

We have taken delivery of all our new fleet of machinery and the combination of new machines, technology advances and the work our Green Staff have put in over the last 5 years since we changed machines will all add up to a further improvement of the course.

We as a committee together with Terry and all the Green Staff are passionate about Haydock Park Golf Club and we plan to keep improving the course year after year. We value the thoughts of members and if anyone has any ideas, comments, praise, critisism there is a book in Peter's shop to write in and this is brought to every monthly committee meeting. A reply will be posted in the book and also sent to the member.

The website will be updated on a regular basis during the season and we will also send out information newsletters via email.
