Haydock Park Golf Club - Course Maintenance Update - Friday 10th September 2010
The greenstaff will be vertidraining the greens on Sunday/Monday as recommended by our agronomist Mr Alistair Beggs (STRI) the benefits of this aeration programme are as follows:
- Breaks up soil compaction. - Aids drainage. - Allows the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the soil profile. - Enables stronger root development. - Creates channels in the rootzone for over seeding.
When the greens have been vertidrained they are top dressed with a compost that contains a large percentage of sand, this aids the profile's drainage capabilities and creates beneficial soil amelioration. This is followed up with over seeding the greens, the seed we use is Browntop bent (Agrostis tenuis) it is recognised as having outstanding characteristics in developing long term putting surfaces.
Below are some of the seeds qualities:
- Requires minimal nutrients. - Drought resistant. - Strong root development. - Good winter colour. - Hard wearing.
The top dressing and over seeding is brushed in to the vertidrain holes, the greens are then cut and ready for playing again.
The Course Management Committee and Head Greenkeeper have had two winter walk rounds to plan the "Winter Programme" and details of this will be emailed to all members in the next couple of weeks and posted on the notice board.
Over the last couple of weeks there has been a dramatic increase in pitch marks on our greens, we would appreciate if all members could always repair their own and at least one other. There is an article that we produced on this subjects on the website under the Course heading.
We would like to thank all members for the success of the new "placing of rakes" suggestion we put in place a couple of months ago. Please keep up the good work!
